Psychiatry in Court: The Use(fulness) of Psychiatric Reports
and Psychiatric Evidence in Court Proceedings (1996)
(RRP $38.50 including GST) ISBN 1876067039
This book, by a psychiatrist, has been written for lawyers
and those interested in these fascinating areas of study.
The use and usefulness of psychiatric evidence had been in
dispute for many years. Often, the courts will assume that
if someone commits an offence whilst suffering from a mental
disorder, the two are connected. This has had many consequences,
including some extraordinary legal and legislative decisions
being made, and effects on the way the psychiatrists are utilised
in the legal system. Part of the problem is the gulf between
these two disciplines, and the confused state of psychiatry
today. This book explores these issues and suggests the usefulness
of psychiatric evidence needs to be totally reassessed. [156pp]
