A US styled system is being gradually adopted in an effort to bring greater efficiency and transparency to management. Change has come through independent action by Japanese companies and through legislation. In May 2002 the Japanese parliament introduced amendments to the law that allows companies to choose whether the change their governance structure from the "Old Large Corporations" or "Sony-type Corporations", to that of "New Corporations" or "Reformed Large Corporations"

Japan Corporate Governance Index Research Group: The Japan Corporate Governance Index Research Group is a non-profit group of academics and business people dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of appropriate corporate governance practices for Japanese firms in a global economy. To promote their objective, they have developed the JCGIndex, a tool to help firms and investors better understand the state of corporate governance in individual firms and Japan as a whole.
Japan Corporate Governance Forum: CGF attempts not only to put forward effective policies relevant to corporate governance, but also to set a model for exploring new kinds of academic associations
Japan Business Federation: Mission of the Federation is to achieve a private sector-led, vital and affluent economy and society in Japan, for which it will demonstrate its leadership and in setting the path for the country. Establishment of free, fair, and transparent market economy under the principles of self-responsibility is essential.
