Brief Biographical Details

Gillian Triggs is a Public International lawyer and a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. She has been a Professor in Law at the University of Melbourne since 1996, having graduated in law in 1968 and gaining a PhD in 1982. Over the last few years, Professor Triggs has been the Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London

Professor Triggs has published papers and books on the World Trade Organisation, Energy and Resources Law, Law of the Sea, Territorial Sovereignty, Jurisdiction and Immunity, International Criminal Law, International Environmental Law and Human Rights. She is currently the Joint General Editor of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly and a member of the editorial boards of the Melbourne Journal of International Law and the International Journal of Energy & Natural Resources Law. Her most recent publication is a general text, International Law: Contemporary Principles and Practices (2006) and her forthcoming book, with Emeritus Professor Victor Prescott, is International Territorial Boundaries: Law and Politics.

Professor Triggs has maintained a commercial practice as a Consultant in International Law to Mallesons Stephen Jaques and has advised governments in the Asia Pacific region on questions relating to continental shelf rights and jurisdiction. She has also directed projects for the Asian Development Bank on legal capacity building in Vietnam, Mongolia and Indonesia and was the Australian Representative on the Council of Jurists for the Asia Pacific Forum for National Human Rights Institutions.
