Academic issues

Examination
When and where will the exam be held?

The exam will take place on Friday 12 December 2008 in Shanghai, China. Further information about the exam will be provided in the Unit Outline, which will be available on WebCT.

Research essay
When is the research essay due?

The research essay is due on Friday 20 February 2009.

How do I submit my research essay?
The research essay must be submitted via the WebCT Assignment Dropbox. Instructions on "How to Use the Assignment Dropbox on WebCT" will be made available on the WebCT site.

You are also required to submit an identical hard copy of your paper in person to the Information Desk on Level 12, together with the relevant University assignment cover sheet certifying that you have read and understood the University policy on plagiarism. Papers will not be marked unless they are accompanied by an assignment cover sheet. The hard copy must be submitted by the due date.

Students who reside outside Sydney may submit their hard copies by post. Hard copies should arrive on or before the due date, or have a postmark showing clearly that they were posted before 5:00pm on the due date.

Research essays may NOT be submitted by email.

You must comply with the University of Sydney's Academic Board Resolution and Policy Statement: Academic Honesty in Coursework which is available at: http://www.usyd.edu.au/senate/policies/Plagiarism.pdf

Please note that your paper may be scrutinised using Turn-It-In plagiarism detection software.

How do I request an extension?
Requests for an extension must be communicated directly to Vivienne Bath in advance of the due date (preferably well before the due date) for the assignment, including compelling reasons why the extension is necessary. Medical certificates should accompany requests made on the basis of ill-health. These extensions of time will be granted only in special circumstances. Students should be warned that late submission of essays may result in late issue of results, even if the extension has been approved. Special consideration forms from the Student Centre are not a substitute for an extension - they are there to deal with misadventure during exams and are taken into account in pass/fail situations. They will not prevent the imposition of a penalty if you have not obtained an extension.

Policy on late submission
The research essay must be submitted via the WebCT Assignment Dropbox. You are also required to submit an identical hard copy of your paper in person to the Information Desk on Level 12 before the desk closes on the due date (generally 5:00 pm). It is your responsibility to check the time at which the desk closes and make sure that your work is submitted in time.

Students who reside outside Sydney may submit their hard copies by post. Hard copies should arrive on or before the due date, or have a postmark showing clearly that they were posted before 5:00pm on the due date.

The late submission of a piece of assessment which has not been granted an extension will attract a penalty. For further information on the essay and assessment criteria, refer to the Unit Outline, which will be available on WebCT.

Results
When will I receive my results?
Results for the Winter School will be available by July 2009. Final year students should note that you will not be able to graduate in the May 2009 graduation ceremony.

How do I access my results?
Following enrolment, students will receive a Unikey login which can be used to access results online from MyUni (http://myuni.usyd.edu.au/). Official result notices will also be mailed to students, so it is important to ensure that the Law School has your correct contact details.

Cross-institutional students will require an official University of Sydney transcript so that your Winter School studies can be credited towards your degree. Please note that your home institution will not generally accept a results notice as evidence that you have completed cross-institutional studies.

Students can request official University of Sydney academic transcripts from the Student Centre of the University. Please go to http://www.usyd.edu.au/studentcentre/records/index.shtml for further details.

How do I access my results on MyUni?
You will be notified by email when your results are available on MyUni.

To access MyUni (http://myuni.usyd.edu.au/) you will require your Unikey account details. Current USYD students should have no trouble accessing MyUni as your Unikey details should be well-known to you. Cross-institutional students will be sent their Unikey details by postal mail in early January. If you cannot locate your letter, or are having trouble logging in to MyUni, you should contact the University’s IT Help Desk on +61 2 9351 6000 for assistance.

Once you have logged in to MyUni you need to click on the "MyAdmin" tab at the top of the page. From there you need to click on the "Login to Student Administration" link (if you are asked to login again use your Unikey). You should then be able to access your results from this page.

Laptops, email & phones

Can I bring my laptop?
If you plan to bring a laptop please make sure that you have arranged for travel insurance which includes coverage for your laptop. If you are planning to travel around China, we suggest that you do not bring your laptop with you. If you plan to use your laptop in the classroom, make sure your battery is functioning as there is limited access to power points.

Please note that if you do bring your laptop to Shanghai please be aware that the University of Sydney and the East China University of Political Science & Law accept no liability for any loss or damage that may occur. You should ensure that you have arranged appropriate insurance.

Is email and Internet access available?
Email and Internet access is not available in the accommodation rooms; however, a computer room is available for use by Winter School students. You may also be able to use an internet cafe. Use of the computer facilities in the computer room is free. However, students should be aware that the number of computers is limited and that due to the filtering of content in China and slow internet speeds, access to sites may be slow or may even be blocked (particularly in the case of non-Chinese sites, including most popular email providers). Do not plan to do research on these computers, and do not expect that email access will be as fast or convenient as it is in Australia.

What sort of phone access is available?
There is a phone in each room. Family and friends can phone through to your room and from your room you can make local calls and reverse charge/phone card international calls. We suggest you purchase a pre-paid phone card.

Australian mobiles work in China, but you need to contact your mobile company before you depart Australia to have international roaming activated. International calls from and to China can be expensive. You should check the rates before making calls.

Voltages & sockets

What voltage is used in China?
Voltage in China is the same as Australia: 220V 50Hz.

What electrical sockets are used in China?
You will find a variety of sockets in Chinese buildings – including Australian sockets. If you are reliant on electrical equipment, it is useful to carry European and Japanese adaptor plugs. Adaptors can be obtained cheaply in Shanghai. Australian, Japanese and European plugs (see below) can be used with most of the electrical sockets in the Guest House.
