The New LLB Program
You may have heard that we are introducing a new curriculum for the Bachelor of Laws, whereby all units of study will be weighted equally at 6 credit points.
Why restructure?
The University’s Academic Board requires all faculties to standardise their undergraduate programs so that all units of study are weighted 6 credit points. The Faculty of Law has restructured the Bachelor of Laws to meet this requirement.
Am I affected by the restructure?
Combined Law students
- If you commenced the Combined Law program in 2006 or later, you will come under the new structure.
- If you commenced Combined Law prior to 2006 or transferred into Combined Law in 2006 (and completed Contracts and/or Criminal Law that year), you come under the old structure.
For details on the structure of the law component of your degree, please refer to the Combined Law Sequence table
Graduate Law students
All current Graduate Law students come under the old structure. The new structure will commence for Graduate Law in 2008.
Please refer to the Graduate Law comparison table between old and new for more information.
What has changed?
The order, content and name of most compulsory units of study have changed. In moving from an 8 credit point to a 6 credit point system, the number of contact hours for each law unit has been reduced from 52 to 39 hours. This means that most units will have three contact hours per week instead of the previous four.
Will the restructure affect the duration of my degree?
No. You are still required to complete a total of 144 credit points of law units to qualify for your LLB. The Combined Law program still takes 5 years full-time to complete and the Graduate Law program 3 years full-time.
