The Sydney LLB - Scholarships and Prizes
In addition to the University of Sydney's scholarships, the Sydney Law School offers students a number of scholarships during their studies and upon graduation. For further information on non Law specific scholarships for new students, please visit the Scholarships Unit.

The Sydney Law School is undertaking a major review throughout 2009 of all prizes and scholarships.
Conditions of award and value of these prizes and scholarships may vary as a consequence of this review.
Gaire Blunt Scholarship
The Gaire Blunt scholarship is being offered by the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia. It commemorates Gaire Blunt who was a leading competition law practitioner and a partner at Allen Allen & Hemsley (now known as Allens Arthur Robinson) from 1970 to 2005.
This scholarship recognises that Gaire played a central role in developing and mentoring the careers of many young lawyers, and was always concerned to ensure that he gave younger lawyers the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their talents.
One Scholarship of $5000 is offered each year and is based on an application an submission of a paper of 10,000-20,000 words. Submissions close 30th June 2008.

Ivan Roberts Scholarship
$5,000 per annum for a maximum of three years for a graduating student.
The Larry Kwok Australia- China Scholarship and The Gough Whitlam Australia- China Scholarship
Both scholarships were established in 2008 by donations received from Mr Larry Kwok and the Kwok Family Trust. These scholarships aim to promote relations and understanding between Australia and China, to strengthen the University of Sydney profile and brand in China, to expand the existing links between the University of Sydney and Peking University and to develop and promote a model of support that will serve as a positive example to other alumni in Hong Kong, China and South East Asia in general.
The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents willing and able to undertake full-time study for a semester at Peking University. The scholarships shall be open to students of any discipline/subject which is provided by both participating institutions, but priority will be given to students of either or both of the faculties of Law and of Economics and Business for the first three years of the scheme.

Peter Cameron Sydney Oxford Scholarship
Background: The Scholarship was established by the Law School and the Cameron family through contributions from the friends and colleagues of the late Peter Cameron to promote further study in Law at the completion of a Bachelor of Laws.
Conditions of Award: The scholarship shall be awarded under the following conditions:
1. The value of the scholarship will be $30,000, payable as a one-off payment.
2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Faculty of Law, on the recommendation of a selection committee constituted by the Dean.
3. The scholarship shall be awarded to enable a Law graduand/graduate to undertake a Bachelor Civil Law, or an equivalent Law degree as determined by the Dean, at the University of Oxford.
4. The tenure of the scholarship is one year. Payment is conditional on acceptance into the Bachelor of Civil Law degree program. The student may be required to re-pay the scholarship if they withdraw from the degree before completion.
5. The scholarship shall be open to graduands and graduates who are not of more than one year’s standing from the dated of their graduation in the Faculty of Law at the close of applications.
6. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status.
7. Criteria for selection will be academic performance in the Bachelor of Laws and community service.

Pitt Cobbett Scholarships
Background information: Established in 1939 by a bequest from Professor Pitt Cobbett who was appointed to the first Chair of Law in 1890 and subsequently became the first Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Eligibility: Applicants should be full-time students enrolled in either Combined Law or Graduate Law at The University of Sydney.
Basis for award: Financial need, academic merit. The scholarships are awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Law to candidates of the Combined Law or Graduate Law programs, who give the Dean satisfactory assurance that they require assistance to meet student expenses and who have, to the satisfaction of the Dean, demonstrated academic merit in secondary and/or tertiary education. First year students are eligible to apply.
Benefits: There may be more than one recipient per annum depending on availability of funds. The value of each scholarship will be determined by the Dean within the range of $500-$1000.
Tenure: The scholarship is tenable for one year only.

The Justice Peter Hely Scholarship
Background: The Scholarship was established by the Law School through contributions from the friends and colleagues of the late Justice Peter Hely to promote postgraduate study in the fields of commercial law and equity. The scholarship is open to final year law students, Law graduands and graduates of the University of Sydney, to enable them to undertake a postgraduate degree in the fields of commercial law and equity, either by research or coursework, at the University of Sydney or any other appropriate university.
Conditions of Award: The scholarship shall be awarded under the following conditions:
- The value of the scholarship will be $14,000, payable as a one-off payment.
- The scholarship shall be awarded by the Faculty of Law, on the recommendation of a selection committee constituted by the Dean.
- The scholarship shall be awarded to enable a Law graduand/graduate to undertake a postgraduate degree in Law, either by research or coursework, at the University of Sydney or any other appropriate university.
- Payment is conditional on acceptance into an appropriate Law degree program. The student may be required to re-pay the scholarship if they withdraw from the degree before completion.
- The scholarship shall be open to final year students, graduands and graduates of the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney.
- Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status.
- Criteria for selection will be academic performance in the Bachelor of Laws or Master of Laws, or equivalent, and community service.

University of Sydney Graduate Entry Scholarships
Background Information: Established in 2005 by the University of Sydney.
Eligibility: This scholarship is available to students applying for entry to Graduate Law.
Basis for Award: Awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity.
Value of Award: $6,000 for one year or three years

Victoria Gollan Memorial Fund Scholarship
Background Information: Established in 1996 by donations made in memory of Victoria Jane Barclay Gollan. The purpose of the fund is to assist an Aboriginal student in the study of law at the University of Sydney.
Eligibility: Full time Aboriginal student enrolled in a Law degree at the University of Sydney. (Undergraduate or Postgraduate level)
Basis for Award: Academic merit and financial need.
Value of Award: $1,500

Zoe Hall Scholarship
Background information: The Scholarship Fund was instigated by Minter Ellison and Middletons, Moore and Bevans in memory of Zoe Hall, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney who was tragically killed with many others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996. Support for the scholarships has come from the Hall family and friends, a broad cross-section of the legal profession and the community.
Eligibility: Applicants should be full-time students who are Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents enrolled in the fourth or fifth year of Combined Law or the second or third year of Graduate Law.
Basis for award: The basis for awarding the Scholarship is contribution to university, faculty or community activities; academic merit; and financial need.
Conditions: The scholarship may not be shared. The successful applicant may not hold any other scholarship or award concurrently with the scholarship.
Benefits: Each year, one or two scholarships may be awarded. The value of each scholarship will be determined by the Selection Committee but may be up to $5000, subject to availability of funding.
Tenure: The scholarship is tenable for one year only.
