Jury
Research Conference October 2003 |
Anyone
with an interest in jury research is invited to a one-day
conference about current issues in jury research.
This meeting will bring together jury practitioners
(judges, jury commissioners, prosecutors, lawyers etc.)
with researchers in several disciplines (psychology,
criminology, architecture, forensic medicine, acoustic
engineering etc.) to review the latest research findings
about juries. This will be held at the Institute of
Criminology, Sydney Law School.
Australia's
leading jurist, High Court Justice Michael Kirby will
be speaking, developing some of the issues he has raised
before about communicating with juries: <http://www.hcourt.gov.au/speeches/kirbyj/kirbyj_genx.htm>.
Participants
are invited to provide information about their current
research interests in the area, and contribute papers
to cross-disciplinary workshops organized around themes
such as:
- jurors'
understanding of expert evidence
- role of
juries in civil cases, or personal accident cases
- improving
the architecture of jury rooms and jury boxes
- providing
new technologies for the jury
- admissibility
of evidence and exclusion of evidence from juries
- juror
preconceptions and misconceptions in sexual assault
cases
- providing
better training for, and clearer instructions to juries
- use of
simulated juries and other research methods to study
juries
The
day will conclude with an architectural tour of jury
spaces in inner Sydney
