Memorial
Gathering for Gordon Hawkins |
The
Institute of Criminology, with the support of the Law
Faculty University of Sydney, is holding a memorial
gathering in honour of Gordon Hawkins, on Friday
19 March in the Assembly Hall (level 4), Sydney Law
School, 173-175 Phillip St, Sydney, 5.30 for 6pm.
Refreshments will be provided.
Gordon
Hawkins, internationally renowned criminologist and
former Director of the Sydney University Institute of
Criminology, died in Sydney on Sunday the 29th of February
2004 at the age of 84. He was well known for the "Honest
Politician's Guide To Crime Control" (1970) (with
Norval Morris), and a series of studies on gun control
(1987) and incapacitation (1995) with Franklin Zimring,
and imprisonment in America (1981) with Michael Sherman.
Gordon
Hawkins made a huge contribution to the establishment
of criminology at the University of Sydney between 1961
and his retirement from teaching in 1984. Certainly
the contemporary standing of the Institute of Criminology
owes much to his initial work.
The
program for the gathering is available.
