Irish Political Prisoners

Professor Sean McConville will talk about his book, Irish Political Prisoners 1848-1922: Theatres of War (Routledge 2003) and his current research up to and slightly beyond the Good Friday Agreement.

Seán McConville is Professor of Criminal Justice at Queen Mary College, University of London.  He has taught and researched at major universities on both sides of the Atlantic and has advised governments, legislatures and official bodies in the UK, US and Europe. He was a consultant in a number of major prison litigation projects across the in the US.  His history of punishment has now reached the third of five projected volumes and he has published widely elsewhere on this and related topics.  Other publications include Islamic criminal law and procedure and prison architecture.  He is currently working on volume 4 of his history series, which will deal with Irish political prisoners in the period 1920 - 2000.
