Crisis in Bail and Remand

The number of persons held on remand in NSW prisons has almost doubled since 1995. This has been one of the most significant factors behind the increase in the NSW imprisonment population. Despite the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, bail decisions continue to have an adverse effect on Aboriginal accused persons, including juveniles. This seminar will offer the opportunity for public discussion and debate concerning bail decision-making, the escalating numbers of people being held on remand, and provisions being debated in the NSW Parliament to further tighten the eligibility for bail.
