"... historical origins are not readily put aside and a change to republicanism seems highly unlikely in the forseeable future." Wright, EJ (ed) Doing business in Australia, New York, Matthew Bender, 1992, p2-11. When researching issues related to Australian republicanism and constitutional monarchy, you will note there is a lot of material published. The aim of this pathfinder is to indicate a number of places to find information on these contentious issues. Whilst using some databases, the preferred term is "republicanism" whereas in others "republic" is sufficient.
Where are the books on an Australian republic and constitutional monarchy? Some books and journals will be in other libraries of the University of Sydney. Here is a list of possible subject headings to look for:
Note: If you just look up 'republic', you will get a lot of hits irrelevant to Australia.
Although the following titles are listed under Monarchy and Republicanism, there are discussions on both topics in many of the titles listed below. This list is by no means exhaustive. Many of the speeches given on our topics are given at conferences or seminars. Some of these are available by examining the Web resources under Online Services. In particular note: Samuel Griffith Society homepages at http://www.samuelgriffith.org.au where the papers from annual conferences of the society are available.
From the Law Library Databases website http://www.library.usyd.edu.au:1080/libraries/law/databases.html we have the following journal indexes available: AGIS (Attorney-General's Information Service). This indexes Australian and overseas law journals. APAIS (Australian Public Affairs Information Service). This is a general index of Australian journals in the social sciences. LegalTrac. This is an US index but includes journals from other jurisdictions, including Australia. It has the broadest coverage of any legal journals index and is updated daily via the Internet. Index to Legal Periodicals. This is a US index which also has wide coverage of other jurisdictions. The print copy goes back to 1880. Legal Journals Index. This is an index of United Kingdom publications and includes many not indexed elsewhere. Pais International. An index to the literature of public and social policy, and the social sciences, in general. Comments: 1.Check our list of databases for many more useful indexes. 2.CD ROM access is available only in the Law School building. Note - The US spellings and terms when using US based journal indexes eg labor not labour, organisation not organisation, antitrust not trade practices, condominiums not strata title, eminent domain not land acquisition. - If you just key in the term "republic", you will get a lot of hits (such as Republic of Ireland, Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The People's Republic of China, etc). Instead, "republicanism/republic and australia/" may be a better search, although this will still yield some irrelevant hits because "australia" may be part of the journal name and not the article.

There are some resources which the Law Library does not hold and these are listed as some of you may have access to other libraries' collections: Finding Journals: you can find out which Australian library holds it by looking up the electronic database called SIAL (Serials in Australian Libraries) which is available on the Law Library Network under Legal Reference Tools. Finding Books etc : try the UNSW or Macquarie Catalogues (links available from the Library Catalogues page <http://www.library.usyd.edu.au:1080/catalogue/othercat.html> or library staff can access a database called Kinetica for you to see which library holds the title needed.
